The 24 hours Le Mans was the ultimate challenge for most manufacturers and also for Bizzarrini. He competed at Le
Mans in 1964, 1965 and 1966. His best result was a 7 th place a success for such a small team. 1964 and 1965 were the last
years for the front engine cars. The E type Jaguars, the Aston Martins and even the Ferrari 250 GTO were about to be replaced
by new mid engine concepts. Everyone knew that Ferrari and Ford were coming up with new cars for the 1966 race.
Bizzarrini also decided to develop a new mid engine car. The Bizzarrini P 538 was born. P for prototipo. It was and still is a
beautiful design, but time was to short for the small company to test and develop it properly and it was retired on the 1966
race. In 1967 the rules were changed and the smaller 3 litre engines replaced the big 5-7 litre engines. Bizzarrini did not
have the money to develop the car and the P 538 project was dropped. Only 4 or 5 cars were build. One of them using a
Lamborghini engine making it sort of a complete Bizzarrini car.

Back at the factory Bizzarrini had started a new project besides racing. It was small sportscar for the American market,
called the 1900 Europa. The Europa was a two seater coupe that looked like a scaled down 5300 Strada. For power
it used an Opel 1900 engine that was tuned to 120 HP. It was a lovely little sportscar with good performance and plans were
made for both a race version and a Spider version. At this time the company seemed to be doing very well. Sales were good
and privateers were competing with 5300 Corsas and winning both in Europe and USA. But things were not as well as they
seemed. Bizzarrini was and is not a businessman. The development of both the racing P 538 project and the 1900 Europa
was too much for such a small company. Bizzarrini needed new capital to continue.
